How to optimize for Perplexity AI

Perplexity answers a question in a paragraph and cites a handful of sources beside it. There is no page two. This guide explains how Perplexity actually picks the local businesses it names, and the eight things that change whether you are one of them.

How Perplexity picks sources

Perplexity is a retrieval-augmented system: it searches the live web, pulls a set of candidate pages, and writes an answer grounded in what it just read, with links back to those pages. It is not recalling a ranking from memory. That means your job is not to “rank” — it is to be the easiest, most consistent, most recent source to quote on a specific local question.

Three properties decide that: consistency (your facts agree everywhere), extractability (the answer sits in plain text, not in an image or a PDF), and recency (something about you changed this month).

The eight-step checklist

  1. 1. Let PerplexityBot in

Open your robots.txt and confirm no rule blocks PerplexityBot, and that your service, location and contact pages are crawlable. A single broad Disallow is the most common reason a business is invisible to answer engines.

  2. 2. Publish LocalBusiness schema with a real address

Mark up name, street address, geo coordinates, phone, hours, priceRange and areaServed. A Highland Park dentist should list "Highland Park", "Eagle Rock" and "Glassell Park" in areaServed rather than a vague "Los Angeles area".

  3. 3. Make NAP identical everywhere

Your site, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and industry directories must show the same name, address and phone — down to the suite number. Conflicting records are the single biggest reason a model skips you and cites a competitor it can verify.

  4. 4. Build review velocity, not just review count

Answer engines weight recency. Twelve reviews spread over the last twelve months beats ninety reviews that stopped in 2023. Ask after every completed job, and reply to each one — replies add extractable text that names your services and neighborhoods.

  5. 5. Write pages that answer the question directly

Perplexity extracts short, factual spans. Put the answer in the first two sentences under each heading: "Same-day AC repair in Pasadena, typically a 2-hour arrival window, $149 diagnostic." Then support it with detail.

  6. 6. Earn citations on sources it already trusts

Local press, neighborhood publications, chamber and trade association listings, and genuinely useful data pages get retrieved far more often than your own homepage. One LAist or Eater LA mention can outweigh months of on-site work.

  7. 7. Add an FAQ block to every service page

Question-shaped headings map cleanly onto the prompts people actually type. Mark them up with FAQPage schema so the pairing between question and answer survives extraction.

  8. 8. Track your Share of Model monthly

Run the same 20-30 prompts a customer would ("best emergency plumber near me in Silver Lake") every month and record which businesses get named. That percentage is your real ranking on Perplexity.

A Los Angeles worked example

Take two auto shops in Culver City. Shop A has 300 reviews, the newest from eighteen months ago, an address that reads “Culver City” on Yelp and “Los Angeles” on its own site, and services listed inside a designed image. Shop B has 60 reviews with four added this month, identical address data across its site and every map profile, a plain-text services list with prices, and a short FAQ answering “do you do same-day brake service in Culver City?”

Ask Perplexity for a brake shop in Culver City and it will usually name Shop B. It can verify Shop B in one pass and quote a sentence that directly answers the question. Shop A’s strength is invisible to the retrieval step.

Perplexity vs. the other engines

How Perplexity differs from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Apple Intelligence
EngineWhat it leans on most
PerplexityLive retrieval plus visible citations. Rewards crawlable, quotable, recently updated pages.
ChatGPT searchA blend of retrieval and trained knowledge. Rewards businesses with broad, consistent mentions across the web.
Google AI OverviewsGoogle’s own index and map data. Rewards a complete, active Google Business Profile.
Apple IntelligenceApple Maps business data. Rewards a claimed, accurate Apple Business Connect listing.

Common questions

Does schema markup help with Perplexity?

Indirectly, yes. Schema makes your facts unambiguous to the crawlers and indexes Perplexity retrieves from, which reduces the chance it pulls an outdated third-party version of your hours or address.

How long does it take to show up?

Crawl-level fixes such as robots.txt and schema can register within days. Citation and review-velocity work compounds over two to three months, which is why we track Share of Model monthly rather than weekly.

Can I pay to be in Perplexity answers?

Not for the cited sources themselves. The citation list is earned through retrieval, which is exactly why the technical and reputation groundwork matters.

We run the prompts your customers actually type, measure how often Perplexity and the other engines name you, and diagnose what is blocking the citation.
